Figure-Ground

Definition

The relationship between a form and the space around it — what the eye reads as object versus background, and how the negative space itself becomes active.

Why it matters

Ground is not leftover space. In minimal graphic work, the shape of the empty area is doing as much compositional work as the mark itself.

Example

A mark positioned so the counterspace around it forms a second, equally deliberate shape.

Note

Ambiguous figure-ground images make the point in seconds, but transferring that to your own work isn’t automatic. Try describing the shape of the space in a peer’s piece — naming it out loud forces the shift.
