Cropping

Definition

Removing unwanted portions of an image by selecting a rectangular (or shaped) area and discarding everything outside it, changing its dimensions and/or aspect ratio.

Why it matters

Crop is often the single most impactful edit for improving composition — it removes distraction, sharpens focus, and can rescue an image shot at the wrong aspect ratio for its intended use.

Example

Cropping a wide landscape photo into a tight square, or tightening a frame around a subject to remove distracting background.

Not to be confused with

Crop marks (Section 11), which indicate where a printed sheet is trimmed rather than editing the image itself. Students conflate these reliably; the shared word is doing real damage.
