Grid

Definition

An underlying structure of intersecting horizontal and vertical lines used to align and organize content consistently across a layout.

Why it matters

A grid gives a repeatable system for placement, making multi-page or multi-screen work feel unified rather than arranged piece by piece.

Example

A 12-column grid used consistently across every page of a magazine so headlines, images, and text blocks always align to the same underlying structure.

Teaching note

A grid built from many contributors’ work — a class poster of uniform tiles, for instance — demonstrates the payoff and the fragility at once. One mis-sized contribution is visible to everyone.
