Columns

Definition

The vertical divisions of a grid that content is aligned to and flows within.

Why it matters

Columns control line length and reading comfort, and how many columns a layout uses changes how dense or airy it feels.

Example

A newspaper’s narrow multi-column grid keeps text legible at small sizes, while a single wide column suits a slower, editorial read.
