Definition

The intentional use of color relationships (contrast, harmony, palette) to support mood, hierarchy, and meaning in a design.

Why it matters

Color is rarely decorative — it directs attention, sets tone, and can carry as much meaning as the words or images themselves.

Example

Choosing a warm, high-contrast palette for an urgent event flyer versus a muted palette for a gallery invitation.
