Deliberately breaking or stretching conventional typographic rules for expressive or conceptual effect.

Why it matters

Experimentation only reads as intentional when it’s grounded in an understanding of the convention it’s departing from.

Example

Letting type overlap, distort, or bleed off the edge of a composition to convey urgency or tension.
