Mass and Visual Weight

Definition

The perceived heaviness of an element, produced by its size, density, value, contrast, and position.

Why it matters

Weight determines what the eye reaches first and how a composition balances. Two elements meant to be in tension must carry weights that make that tension read.

Example

A small area of dense black holding its own against a much larger field of pale gray.
