Critique

Definition

Structured collective examination of work in progress or at completion, in which observations are offered and the maker responds.

Why it matters

Critique is how a maker discovers what the work communicates as opposed to what was intended. It is a skill that improves with practice on both sides.

Example

A session where each piece is presented, discussed against the project’s terms, and given specific directions to test next.

Teaching note

Critique cannot be reconstructed from posted materials or made up individually — it depends on the group being present, which is worth stating as policy rather than assuming.
