Definition

The single flat surface — physical or digital — that a design is composed on, defined by its fixed dimensions and orientation.

Why it matters

Every layout decision — grid, margins, columns — is made in relation to the page’s size and proportions; changing the page changes everything built on top of it.

Example

A US Letter page (8.5 × 11 in) behaves differently than a square social canvas (1080 × 1080 px) — the same content needs rethinking for each.
